S.A.M.A.M.Y!

Little resplendent crystals growing in the the secret heart of the earth! There is no human there to see them, and yet there they are, beautiful in the dark.

We went to see the Minerals display at the Melbourne Museum. I've waited a long time- must be 15 years, I reckon- for the re-display of this collection which has been tucked away since the Museum was re-located. There were many splendorous specimens, including this matrix of silver crystals above. Very hard to get a good shot in the gloom, so sorry about the fuzzy pics.
The display was augmented with a soundtrack- kind of eerie, grumbling sounds. This made me laugh. It had a kind of cataclysmic vibe.
Like as if Bruce Willis was about to save us from a meteor. Or Tom Baker. I'd stick with Tom. He can talk his way out of any hostile-alien encounter.
I would have preferred some music which suggested crystals forming.
Maybe this Philip Glass/ Sesame Street number that we all know and love?

or a Gamelan band?

Or some kind of crazy-wonderful highlife?

Any suggestions for Crystal Music?
I might put them in a letter to the Museum, we'll call ourselves the Society for the Appropriate Musical Accompaniment of Minerals- Yeah! (or S.A.M.A.M.Y!)

Ok Ill stop now...!

  2. David...so lovely you could visit the museum.
Imaginary dinosaur digestive systems; the rumblings of lava flow....talk about noise overload...one couldn't call this white noise, either! It would be absolutely marvelous if you could convince someone to create a quiet noise space...that would be such a treat! I'm all in favour of SAMAMY!!

  3. Thanks tracerapotts. Stewart Copeland! So there was life after Sting?

    Robyn-
Great to see you at the Museum!
Sometimes I am a bit critical of the Museum - but only because it is so important to me! I cant help but feel that the curators are worried that the specimens and artefacts are boring in themselves, so they have to make everything with 'flashing lights'...( or they are worried that today's children will find them boring?)- but I think they really needn't worry- if my own children are any thing to go on, they go back to the same antiquated cabinets ( like the one with the huge old pythons) and marvel at them again and again... they always skip the video stuff... so interesting... see you next time!

  4. Ah, David.....I fear that like those minerals, you and your children are rare and priceless....not many folk appreciate the objects in themselves...it is the white noise they seem to crave (not to mention the not so white noise)...and wearing borrowed glasses which help to transport them away from....those lovely objects! I hope you saw the ichthyosaur fossil...I love the fossils. It is a bit quieter over there...though the quawking qantasaurus can be a bit disruptive! Keep well, David. You are marvellously inspiring and great for my sanity! Keep me posted on your next visit!
